Summary

The article focuses on the translation of the Quran into Polish written down using the Arabic script in TTefsir manuscripts by Tatars of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Twenty manuscript copies of the First Surah (Al Fatiha) written during the 18th–20th centuries have been compared for this purpose. All these sources contain the same Polish translation with minor orthographic, lin- guistic and textual variations. One group of copies (11 mss) bear evidence of secondary Ruthenization in orthography and language, while another group (5 mss) partially overlapping with the first one contains certain traits of additional Polonization. Three pairs of manuscript copies have been identified as textually related in each pair. It was also possible to identify copies containing a mini- mum of secondary innovations and, thus, being most useful while reconstructing the protograph of the Polish translation of the Quran present in Lithuanian Tatars Tefsir manuscripts.
